A HOUSE FOR AN ARBORIST

A project exploring the particularity of the domestic, what it means to dwell. How the material substance of the house can engender the feeling of the home, using the house as a vessel to accommodate the aspirations of a single person. Reading into ideas of domesticity put forward by Wright; degrees of privacy, the importance of poché to articulate rooms within rooms, creating a cocooning and embodied space. Using the local terrace typology to drive the practical disposition of the plan, fusing this with the poetic and personal preoccupations of the client to generate an entirely site-specific and client-orientated architecture.

THE PLAN IS FIRST FORMED BY THE PERIMETER WALL, OCCUPYING THE FULL SITE FOOTPRINT AND ECHOING THE CURVE OF THE ROAD OUTSIDE. THE INTERNAL LOGIC OF THE PLAN IS BASED ON A SUBDIVISION ACCORDING TO A CROSS SHAPED COURTYARD.

WITHIN THE FOUR QUARTERS FORMED BY THE CROSS, AT THE CORNERS OF THE PLAN, LIVING ROOMS ORBIT AROUND THE CENTRAL CROSSING. WITH WORKING AND COOKING SPACES ON THE GROUND FLOOR, AND LIVING AND SLEEPING SPACES ABOVE.
